GOP Criticizes Biden Following Drone Attack That Killed 3 U.S. Troops

Questions are growing about President Biden’s response to the drone attack in Jordan that killed three U.S. troops. Many GOP lawmakers are calling for a retaliatory strike against Iran, which officials have linked to the attack.

Republicans in Congress are pressing the Biden administration to take action against Iran after the drone attack, which also resulted in injuries to dozens of U.S. personnel. The situation raises concerns about escalating conflict in a region already tense due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin assured that the administration would act to protect U.S. forces. “The president and I will not tolerate attacks on U.S. forces and will take all necessary actions to defend our troops,” Austin stated during a Pentagon briefing.

President Biden has committed to a response, but GOP lawmakers are pushing for a direct strike on Iran. With a potential rematch between Biden and former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election, Republicans are vocal about their demands.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise criticized Biden for what he views as a failure to confront Iranian aggression, while Sen. Lindsey Graham and Sen. Tom Cotton have called for significant military retaliation against Iran. Sen. John Cornyn’s initial call to “Target Tehran” was clarified to exclude civilian targets.

White House spokesman Andrew Bates responded by accusing far-right Republicans of politicizing national security. He noted that these critics did not similarly demand action during the previous administration when American troops were targeted. Bates also emphasized that if Republicans support holding Iran accountable, they should back Biden’s approach and stop providing leniency toward Iran’s actions in other global conflicts.
