China Indicates Recent Patrols Near Alaska Are Just the Start

China has indicated that recent naval exercises near the Aleutian Islands, which prompted a significant U.S. military response, are just the beginning of a new phase in its efforts to expand its global influence.

Last week, a joint flotilla of 11 Chinese and Russian warships patrolled international waters near Alaska. Although the vessels did not enter U.S. territorial waters, their presence raised alarms in the U.S. and Canada. The Wall Street Journal first reported the patrol, which was described by some analysts as a “historical first,” and noted the U.S. Northern Command’s response, which involved deploying American warships and surveillance aircraft to monitor the operation.

Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan, a senior Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, criticized the patrol as a sign of “a new era of authoritarian aggression.” He, along with Senator Lisa Murkowski, stated that they received several classified briefings from Alaska Command about the incident and expressed concerns about the U.S.’s current readiness to address such threats.

Chinese military analyst Fu Qianshao, in an interview with the English-language Global Times, suggested that such naval patrols could become more common. “The Americans should get used to it,” Fu said. While the Global Times is not an official government publication, it is known for reflecting the views of the Chinese Communist Party.

Chinese officials have confirmed the significance of the joint drills. The exercises, known as The Northern/Interaction-2023, involved over 2,300 nautical miles of operation and were intended to demonstrate the “mutual trust” between the Chinese and Russian militaries, according to Senior Col. Tan Kefei of the Chinese Defense Ministry. He stated that China aims to enhance communication and cooperation with other nations and contribute to regional stability.

The Chinese Embassy’s spokesman, Liu Pengyu, told the Wall Street Journal that the patrol was not aimed at any third party and was unrelated to current international or regional situations.

The patrol reflects broader implications, signaling China’s challenge to long-standing American strategic dominance in the Pacific. Analysts view the joint naval operation as a significant provocation. Retired Army General Barry McCaffrey described the presence of the Chinese and Russian ships as a “major” provocation in a recent social media post, highlighting the growing tension in the region.
